When Do We Teach How to be Humane?

When Do We Teach How to be Humane?

Medical school trains doctors to be experts in anatomy, diagnosis, and the science of medicine.

But there’s a question that often goes unasked in this rigorous curriculum: when do we TEACH doctors how to be humane?

It shouldn’t be an afterthought or something that “comes with experience.” Emotional intelligence, empathy, and the ability to connect with patients on a human level must be as central to medical training as any clinical skill.

If we truly want our healthcare system to heal, we need doctors who are not only experts in science but also experts in human connection. This isn’t a “soft” skill. It’s a vital, clinical skill.
